Used as an alternative treatment for Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorders, more commonly known as TMJ, BOTOX relieves jaw tension and TMJ for many patients when injected into facial muscles distressed with discomfort and pain. BOTOX injections often relieve headaches caused by teeth grinding and, in some cases, BOTOX can even work to minimize lock jaw.
The Temporo-Mandibular Joint is located on both sides of the head at the point where the jawbone meets the skull. This joint is used while we eat, talk, swallow and do many regular activities. If overworked or displaced due to excessive teeth grinding, a person may encounter severe tension headaches and well as sharp jaw pain. By injecting BOTOX, jaw tension is relieved by making muscles unable to engage in the unconscious, powerful movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain. Injections are mainly focused in the frontalis, temporalis and masseter, and only the areas injected with BOTOX will be “relaxed”. BOTOX treatment for TMJ therapy will not affect anywhere else in your body.
The BOTOX treatment for TMJ disorders and jaw tension are usually effective, timely and non-surgical. Although relief can take up to a week, most patients experience a noticeable improvement within one or two days of their first treatment. The length of the treatment depends on the number of injections needed and can be completed in roughly half an hour.
